Biography

Dr. Mark E. Meaney is President and CEO of the National Institute for Paitient Rights. A health care ethicist, his work has focused on both the clinical and organizational sides of health care, particularly on Advance Care Planning, vulnerable populations, organizational ethics, medical error, privacy, and human subjects research.

Before founding the National Institute for Patient Rights, Dr. Meaney taught clinical ethics, bioethics and nursing ethics at universities and colleges across the United States.

He has served as Vice President of Programs and Publications at the Center for Practical Bioethics, Kansas City, MO.

He has also served as the Director of the Center for Ethics in Health Care and the Director of Ethics at St. Joseph’s Health System, renowned cardiac care health system in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Meaney has taught corporate responsibility and business ethics with the Legal Studies Department at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

He has held appointments with Penn State, Thomas Jefferson, and Seton Hall universities. He held a joint appointment in applied ethics with the Division of Medical Humanities, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Interests

Currently, Dr. Meaney serves on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Nanotechnology Association (CNTA), a state sponsored association for the promotion of nanotechnology in Colorado. He is also on the Executive Committee of the Rocky Mountain Technology Alliance (RMTA), an association sponsored by Colorado State University, Colorado Springs, to advance tech transfer. His most recent book is entitled, 3 Secrets Most Hospitals Don’t Want You to Know: How to Empower Patients. Dr. Meaney earned his doctoral degree from Marquette University in 1991. He and his wife live with their three children in Denver, CO.
